SEO or search engine optimization refers to the process of attempting to influence your company’s position in the organic search engine results pages as a means of driving targeted traffic to your website. While years ago company’s were choosing to fully outsource SEO to third parties, today companies are starting to realize that they can achieve better long-term results through training their in-house staff in what it takes to get to the top page of search engines for their choice of keywords and phrases. If your company is intending to invest in anSEO Training Ahmedabad day, or for on-going training, for your marketing, IT and business development functions then you can ensure that you get the most out of the training through ensuring that you know some basics and can truly get the most out of your company’s investment.

Know Your Competitors

Before attending your training day you should look at your competitor’s websites and get an idea of where they are ranking in the search engine result pages. Through being aware of your competition specifically, your SEO training provider will be able to offer advice on how your company can compete with them and will also have a greater understanding of how to tailor the session to issues which may be specific to your sector.

Consider Keywords That You Would Like to Rank For

You should make a list of the keywords that you would like people to find your website under. Rather than merely limiting your keywords to the plain obvious, you should also try to think of many other variations which could imply intent towards buying your products and services. Once you have developed a list of keywords your SEO Training company will be able to offer their input into how effective they might be, and they will also be able to give you training towards how you might go about quantifying the search traffic that each keyword is likely to yield.

Have Specific Questions?

If you have any questions that you would like to ask your SEO trainer, then what better way to ask them than during their sessions. You should make a list of the questions that you would like to ask, in order to ensure you remember to ask them.

Do Some SEO Research

Doing some reading online about SEO could be helpful in allowing you to gain some initial understanding, and therefore you will be more apt at digesting the information that they present to you during your training session. When reading online resources to learn about SEO for the first time, it is perhaps best to ensure that you double check everything you read and never take anything you read as gospel. Although some information that you are presented with is mere fact, other information can be sketchier. When you speak with your Computer Training company, they will be able to clear up any uncertainty that you have. Remember that SEO is an on-going process, and is not something that you will only learn once when it is such a complicated and constantly changing marketing channel.

My wife and I went for an early lunch and had ourselves a wonderful time. You walk in and it’s a dim vintage looking pub. It was a Sunday early afternoon and it wasn’t football season so there wasn’t much of a crowd. There are a few flatscreen TV’s all around the bar and then there’s a restaurant part you can sit with a family if you’d prefer. We ended up sitting at the bar because we wanted to see the taps and there were only a couple of people sitting there. They had 48 draft lines, a cask, and probably over 100 other options for beer by bottle. Good stuff on both ends from all different craft breweries from all over the US and several imports as well. The breweries included (but not limited to) Sam Adams, Harpoon, Stone, Rogue, Dogfish Head, Brooklyn, Avery, Smuttynose, Kona, Magic Hat, Hogaarden, Leffe, North Coast, Southern Tier, Clipper City, New England Brewery, Trappist and the list goes on and on. A very good selection. Everything seemed to be very appropriately taken care of, clean draft lines, everything in bottles appropriately fresh. The Bartender told us that the manager was a big beer fan and some of the brews he buys in bulk and ages appropriately for better tasting beer. The Service was very good. It wasn’t busy but the bartender was very personable and she was very knowledgable about the beer as well. She was also very nice, called us both pet names like “sweety” and “honey” made us feel very welcome and comfortable. The food was pretty good. We each got a bowl of clam chowder, which was ok, I actually expected a little bit more from it, but it was decent. She got a burger and fries that she really enjoyed, I ended up getting the shepards pie meal and it was phenomenal, tasted home-made from scratch. We also split a flight with 4 samples to get us warmed up. I ended up getting Stones13th Anniversary, my wife got a Southern Tier Mokah, then I got an Imperial Stout Trooper Stout. It was only about a 40 minute drive for us, so we both decided we want to go back.

Doherty’s East Ave is my favorite bar in northern Rhode Island. There is a wide selection of draft and bottled beers. You can sample several beers by getting a flight of four or six, but I usually just order from the draft menu. The menu is organized clearly by genre and is updated frequently.

The staff members at Doherty’s are generally knowledgeable and helpful. In particular, Matt (“The Emperor of Beer”) possesses a passion for craft beer and is always willing to answer questions and make recommendations. The staff members at Doherty’s care about their customers and make an effort to remember faces and names.

The atmosphere at Doherty’s is relaxed and casual. This is a great place to hang out with friends at night. The food is decent, as well. Go on Monday nights for 25¢ wings and Tuesday nights for 2 for $12 Burgers. The buffalo fries are also worth a try.

All in all, I’ve had many great experiences at Doherty’s and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

Went yesterday (Saturday) at about 6:00 after a fun round of golf & rain. Driving through the neighborhoods from exit 26 had my friend worried, as this was our first visit. When we found it, we looked at each other; the paint is peeling, the screen on the side door to the kitchen is broken off, there was a sketchy man sitting on the stoop out front, but we parked and gathered our courage. Opening the door and looking in instantly made me happy. A lovely wodden l-shaped bar with taps all over the place, a large coller full of bottles, and much liquor.
The bar itself was kind of quiet, more people were in the next room at dining tables, but overall the place was not busy by any stretch. The bartender gave us good prompt service. The beer menu has maybe 40 drafts on one side and just as many bottles on the other side. Overall a very good selection containing numerous IPA’s APA’s, Hefe’s, a couple of stouts (Stone RIS!), 2 Barleywines, and some misc. other ales.
I started w/ a 10 oz. Maharaja ($8). Ended with a 4 beer flight (you can also order a 6 beer flight) with Delirium Tremens, Loose Cannon on cask, Harpoon Helles Blond Bock and SN Brown Saison. Great stuff. We also had an order of Buffalo Wings, which were very good. Hot enough that you knew it, but not over done. Just right.
My only concern is the pricing. I think for that area the prices are high.
$13 for a bottle of Rochefort 10? $8 for 10 oz. of Maharaja? These are higher than TPH, my frame of reference for any good beer bar, and this is Pawtucket! Nachos on their menu were $10.99, maybe the highest I’ve ever seen.
Despite the prices, the selection was really nice, so I’m sure I’ll visit again. A breath of fresh air in an area that has too few good places to enjoy beer.

I’ve been to East Ave for the great beer selection several times now. The atmosphere is just what I like… a comfortable, relaxing pub environment. It’s on the dark side with lots of bar space, quite a few tables and a mix of beer and sports paraphernalia. My last visit was on a Monday night. They do 25 cent wings and the place was packed.

They keep quite a few on tap (maybe 30+), one on cask and many more in the bottle. The numbers were pretty impressive while I’d previously felt the draft selections lacked a little, they seem to be doing better now. There are quite a few New England beers (Smuttynose, Wachusett) along with some great American breweries (Stone, Sierra Nevada, DFH, Brooklyn) and a fair number of Belgians (Chimay, Leffe, Delerium). If you don’t find something on draft, they’ve got many more in the bottle.

The servers are very patient and attentive and the food is very good. The steak tips are a bit of a house special and won’t disappoint. The chicken sandwich was fantastic as well.

Doherty’s is about as good a beer bar as you’ll find in RI.

Made my first visit to Doherty’s East Ave Pub yesterday to watch the UEFA Champions League final (Barcelona 2-0 Manchester United).

A..Atmosphere is nice and cozy. Several little nooks hide tables of various sizes, so even though it is a somewhat small establishment, it feels bigger because it is sectioned well. Feels kind of old in a comforting way, but not ancient.

Q..The beer quality was just above average. To be fair, I only had a four-paddle sampler (samplers come in four or six-paddle options) and a short glass of Smuttynose Maibock. The samplers were decent and fresh but I felt the Smuttynose was a bit flat.

S..The bartender was our waitress at the bar and she was excellent. Patient during our drink selection; made sure a couple of televisions were turned to the correct channel for the game; polite; asked about our next “flavor” appropriately and was not pushy.

S..Beer selection is what Doherty’s is apparently known for and it did not disappoint. About 40+/- on tap and nearly another 120 bottled. Very diverse selection: this pub has a beer for you regardless of your tastes.

F..The food was good. Large portions on the app’s (chicken fingers w/ honey mustard) and sandwiches (BBQ chicken sandwich w/ bacon & cheese), above average quality. Certainly better than most (if not all) chain restaurants’ similar items.

V..I said reasonable. Prices can seem a bit high, but you get what you pay for here. Yes, some of the bottles and drafts can run your bill up ($7.50 for my short brandy snifter of 8oz Maibock), but you’re not drinking Coors Light or Sam Adams here (unless by choice). Food was a little higher priced than some places, but again, the quality is a bit higher too. Just because a place is a little pricey does not mean it is not well worth the time and money…and Doherty’s pub is worth both in my opinion.

I went to Doherty’s for the first time last night with a few friends and I was pleasantly surprised. They have decent selection on tap (20-30 beers) but I was really impressed with the selection of bottles (Victory, Stone, Dogfish Head, Rogue…) all of my favorites.

It was pretty busy for a Tuesday night but that could have been due to the fact that the Sox were playing to clinch a playoff berth. They have plenty of TV’s including a projector and the Sox game was playing on all of them (definitely a bonus)!

I did not eat but my friends said the food was pretty good. They tried the burgers and the chicken sandwich.

If you’re looking to drink some quality beer, hang out with a few Sox fans, and have a good time Doherty’s is a decent option. I will definitely be back!

All I have to say is “WOW!” My wife and I decided to try something new for dinner last night. We headed to the Bucket to try Doherty’s. Upon arrival, it looked just like any old dive bar, serving nothing but BMC. The interior was filled with a bunch of locals watching various games on the many televisions around the bar and even the table area. We picked a table and began to read the beer menu. I didn’t count the number of taps, but it looks something like 30-40 and it was pretty much all craft beer with a few larger imports. The back had their bottle list which had to be over 100 beers, including some imports, some 750′s and bombers. I ordered a Rogue Imperial IPA and the wife got Magic Hat’s Odd Notion (the summer sour grapefruit ale). The beer was served in proper glassware and we were given their food menu. They had all sorts of interesting items from regular pub fare to some interesting pasta dishes. We both got pasta, I got the Rasta Pasta based on what I read in one of the reviews here and she got the Pasta Jordan. The waitress even brought us out some corn muffins while we waited for the food. The portions were huge and the quality was excellent.

If you haven’t been, you need to try it. The beer selection and the food are out of this world.

Went to Doherty’s East Ave Cafe for the first time last night with my wife and friends and I can tell you that it won’t be the last.

The selection is excellent and the prices are good. There are many American Craft Brews on hand along with several excellent Imports. The beer manager Matt is bringing in a great selection always bringing in new beers as they become available to him. He is very knowledgeable and a pleasure to chat beer with.

The food was very good as well, we had the Steamers, Fish & Chips and Southwest Pasta.

Definitely worth the trip and if you’re in the Providence area, it’s a must!

A year ago I walked in and swore I never set foot in the place again. The case selection was expansive, but mainstream and week.

A nasty review follwed. Matt (the bar manager) who apparently was born with an olive branch in hand, sent an email – come on in, let’s talk, things are changing, don’t worry.

HA! Is there no end to the lies!

Last week I was drinking Arrogant Bastard on Tap, follwed by three knock-out Belgians (all served in proper glassware).

So here I am, foot in mouth, tipping my hat to Matt. He said all along be patient, he had to bring people along slowly. I just didn’t think he would/could do it.

I couldn’t be happier to be wrong.

I have to say that when I first drove up to Doherty’s that it did not quite look like I had expected from what a friend of mine had said. But when I went in I was pleasantly surprised. Walking in the front door, it looks a little on the small side as you face the bar. if you go in a little further you will see that there are a few tables on the other side of the wall that guides you into the building. Also as you walk more into the building you find that they also have a small dining room where there is a very large projector with screen which at the time was playing the Red Sox game.

Right away I looked at the place mat which had the list of all of the beers that they currently had on tap, roughly 40 or so. On the under side of the mat was an even larger menu of beers served by the bottle, roughly 120 more. The waitress explained the “flight” which was either 6 – 5oz samples of beers ($9), or 4 – 5oz samples ($6) from which you could pick from any of the beers on tap excluding any written in italics, which in this case was only one. If the idea of going through the 40 or so beers and only picking 4 or 6 is intimidating the owner, John Doherty, had put together a list 8 pre-made flight lists that he thought would pair nicely together. The beers that I tried in my flight included Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat, Blue Moon white Ale, Hoegaarden, Leffe Brown Ale, Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, and Magner’s Cider. I really enjoyed the flavor of both the sunset wheat and Blue Moon, however my taste tends to lean towards the Witbeir anyway. As far as the white ales went that I tried the Hoegaarden was not as full bodied as the others and had a little watered down taste when compared to the other two. Leffe Brown was not among my favorites however when paired with my meal te flavors were complimented beautifully. Dogfish Head being one of my favorite Breweries I had to try their 60 Minute IPA, as far as IPA’s go it was much like most of the others I have had in the past, however I must admit an IPA is one of my person least favorite styles of beer. Finally the Magner’s Cider was very mild and was much like a mildly carbonated apple juice with a small kcik of alcohol, but still very enjoyable.

As far as the food went their menu included a great variety from BBQ to Italian Chicken Parm to Jamacian Jerk Chicken and more. I enjoyed a great Jerk chicken on liguine with a rich chipotle cream sauce called “Rasta Pasta.” It was a very gernerous portion for 12.99 and was amazing. As stated the Leffe Brown ale paired beautifully with this dish. They had suggested the Left Hand Juju Ginger beer as a pairing, however I felt that the brown ale complimented the dish much nicer.

Overall I completely enjoyed my trip to this place and would not only go again but would most definitely advise everyone I know to try it out.

Respondents to a recent survey published by Beresford Research ranked social networking as more important than reading books or watching TV. It is no secret that social networking is a popular use of our time. Respondents spend an average of 22 hours per week on social networking sites. Yet, some still remain skeptical of social networking’s value to commerce.

A free whitepaper, produced by a key partner behind many PhoCusWright projects, suggests that the social networking world is more than just a static hobby. The social nets created through Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn and other sites are actually complex support circles.

“Before making major decisions, younger people are far more likely to consult their social network,” says Julien Beresford, president, Beresford Research and PhoCusWright senior research analyst. “We see this as a fundamental generational change in how people make decisions. This includes decisions about where to go, where to stay and what to do while at a destination.”

The survey found that younger users (18-24) consult their social network significantly more than older adults (35-54) before making decisions. For these young people, an online social network mirrors the social groups established by older generations through offline activities. No matter the generation, we all rely on advice from people we trust to support our decision making. However, in the case of social networking, that advice comes via a tangible, traceable, ad-supported medium.

This has huge implications on the way travel companies reach consumers. Imagine if your friends’ advice on a unique destination came with advertising (something akin to sending a magazine ad clipping along with a friendly letter, or allowing a spokesman to voiceover your conversation). In fact, 38% of respondents said they clicked on paid advertising while using social networking sites.

Then consider the amount of time users spend kindling their networks. The only activity that ranked as more important among online activities was email – social networking even beat out Web browsing. Travel companies will realize the immense business value of social networking when they understand that someone has finally ‘tapped the consumer’s telephone’.

There are five distinct advantages to social marketing make it a vital tool to any marketing campaign. Here they are:

1. Better Targeting

If carried out properly, social marketing can draw a highly targeted segment of Internet users to visit your business or Website. This can be done by using the various parameters elements and tools on social media websites, enabling you to increase visibility of your content on both a local and global level. Many small business can not only benefit from this global audience, but increase their brand by bringing in a more select local audience.

2. High Return on Investment

ROI (Return on Investment) is one of the most important criteria of most marketing campaigns. For small businesses with low budgets, the marketing ROI needs to be good for it to work. Social marketing is one of the cheapest ways of marketing currently available. And practically all the social media you can use to market your business either costs nothing or costs a very small amount. This low investment means low risk to even the smallest business. Considering that most businesses gain a big pop in visibility after using social networking tools, the advantage is ultimately getting good publicity for free.

3. Does not require specialization or vast technical skills

One of the best advantages of social marketing is that anyone can take advantage of it, even from their own home. Also, it does not require you to learn a coded language or anything of that sort. Most social networking sites are visually oriented and pretty straightforward, which means that practically anyone who understands how to use the Internet can use social networking tools.

4. Works better than online ad campaigns

Because most Internet users are bombarded with ads every day, as a whole society has become so used to them people generally do not click on them. Banners and even link ads are losing their charm because many people do not trust an online advertising campaign backed by money. With social marketing, you can provide a more human touch to attract potential customers.

5. Increased visibility

Social marketing, like blogging, can help to spread information. This information can then be correlated to your site, increasing your site’s popularity. Create new content that people really need and you’ll have no problem drawing people to your site.

Conclusion

All businesses aim to increase their audience. Before the Internet, many spread the word through word of mouth. Social marketing has now taken over as the online version of word of mouth. Harnessing it in the right way results in more customers, more sales, and a higher level of visibility online than ever before.

In 2007, Jim MacMillan was at the top of his profession — a photojournalist who had just shared a Pulitzer Prize for pictures from Iraq’s deadliest combat zones — but he also started to wonder what kind of future that profession had in store for him. His newsroom in Philadelphia was making steep job cuts in the face of plummeting revenues. Then MacMillan attended a BlogWorld conference and returned with a determination to re-invent himself though social networking.

MacMillan has since become highly skilled at using social networking to gain new fans of his photography, and he is hardly alone. Over the last few years, creative professionals — including musicians, writers and artists — have found they can reach an engaged audience by making songs available on a MySpace page or building a national readership by blogging. Now, with the economy mired in a recession, many individuals are wondering how to build a buzz about themselves and find new employment opportunities by adapting the same kind of branding techniques used by businesses.

“I saw that the real value of a new media profile, or a social media profile, is distribution [to an online audience],” MacMillan says. While still employed as a staff photographer at the Philadelphia Daily News, he had launched his own web site — jimmacmillan.net — for posting his photos and linking to related stories in the news. Like many professionals, he also created a profile on Facebook, Twitter and every social network he could learn about, roughly 40 in all.

Eventually, he took a severance package from the newspaper and threw everything into social networking. Today, he has close to 14,000 followers reading his posts on Twitter — a number on a par with some celebrities — and keeps in touch with about 475 friends on Facebook. He believes he reaches a larger and more engaged audience than when he was at the Daily News, but he also concedes his activity is only bringing in “lunch money,” mainly through ads on his blog (which receives traffic referrals from his Twitter postings). But by expanding his network, Macmillan says he also has promising leads on better-paying job opportunities at companies, including some that want advice on social networking.

According to Jonah Berger, Wharton marketing professor, using social networking sites or a new media endeavor such as blogging can be especially useful for workers looking to reshape their career into a new kind of profile. “People will begin to see you in that role,” Berger says. “By creating these links outside of your organization, you can change your meaning to [others].”

Clearly the recession — which has cost the American economy more than five million jobs, including an estimated 1.5 million in the white collar sector — has placed a new premium on the art of networking among workers who see their jobs threatened. As The New York Times recently reported, interest in traditional face-to-face networking groups among executives — even those still collecting a paycheck — has soared in recent months.

Indeed, social networking is that rare sector of the economy that seems to be booming in the midst of the recession. MediaPost reported that businesses spent $2.2 billion on social-networking in 2008, nearly twice as much as they did in 2007, primarily through advertising on popular sites like MySpace and Facebook.

Game-changers

While not dismissing the value of more traditional networking, many experts in the art of self-marketing agree that the rapid rise over the last five years of Internet-based social networking sites is a game-changer. Such sites allow like-minded people to forge connections, not just at lunch, but across the country or even overseas, leading to unprecedented opportunities for ambitious people to expand their list of contacts, generate business leads or even develop a new career.

Initially, it was largely the creative classes who saw that an online following could eventually grow into paying customers. For example, rock musicians who once spent years trying to land a record deal with a major label created pages on the popular MySpace social networking site, forged bonds with online fans through free downloads or other audience-participation efforts and eventually sold compact discs or song downloads to a loyal following.

Author Scott Kirsner, who writes a weekly column for The Boston Globe, recently studied this emerging business model for a book titled, Fans, Friends and Followers: Building an Audience and a Creative Career in the Digital Age. Musicians or authors who build an audience through social connections and an ongoing dialogue over the Internet develop devoted fans who are even more likely to buy a product because they feel a personal connection to that artist, he says.

“There is a major shift [among] consumers, whose entertainment used to be watching TV or buying movie tickets,” Kirsner notes. “That shift is a desire to connect with the artist and to support [him or her] directly.” In addition, these followers often become online evangelists, spreading buzz through their own large social networks.

According to Kirsner, one of the best examples of self-marketing is Jonathan Coulton, a self-described “geek rock” musician who once worked as a computer programmer but has built a large online following through music. Coulton frequently offers songs over the web for free, allows fans to legally create music videos or other forms of artwork around his music, and once famously allowed his followers to come up with the instrumental solo for a track he had posted on his site. Coulton “created this whole community where he would write the songs and others would spread the word to promote it and make products, or add their own creativity,” Kirsner says.

Today, however, social networking is no longer merely the province of the creative classes. Millions of business professionals have joined sites like Facebook — the platform that allows people to share photos, links or information with a network of friends and that has more than 200 million active users worldwide — and LinkedIn, a networking site that is more business oriented and has 35 million users. Gaining fast in popularity is Twitter, with about five million users who exchange information with their network of friends in short bursts of no more than 140 characters.

Wharton marketing professor Eric Bradlow, co-director of the Wharton Interactive Media Initiative, has spent several years studying self-marketing for financial services professionals — one of the hardest-hit sectors in the current slowdown. He says developing a personal “brand” can be as important for a financial advisor as for a rock musician. Bradlow is co-author of a book to be published this summer titled, Marketing For Financial Advisors: Build Your Business by Establishing Your Brand, Knowing Your Clients and Creating a Marketing Plan.

“In these times, people need to differentiate themselves,” notes Bradlow, who became interested in this topic five years ago when he learned that training for financial services professionals almost never included any education about marketing and self-promotion. Bradlow believes it is critical for a worker in the financial sector — especially those who are sole practitioners or run a small business — to develop a brand identity to convince would-be clients to choose them over a large field of rivals. He advises business people to come up with three simple words to define a personal brand — words that could describe a specialized skill set or simply community involvement.

“The most important part is being consistent, [to establish] brand consistency across the various channels,” Bradlow says. That means a business person seeking to build buzz about himself or herself should convey the same message whether meeting people at a local luncheon or building a profile and communicating with friends by way of Facebook. It is also important to understand that different types of networking — traditional or new media — bring different pluses or minuses to the table, he adds. For example, financial planners who target clients in the “at-retirement” sector will have more success making social contacts at a golf club or winning referrals through other trusted professionals, such as lawyers, than by aggressively using Facebook or Twitter, which could even be off-putting to some older clients.

LinkedIn is by far and away the most popular business-oriented social network — with more than 35 million registered users scattered across more than 170 industries — but it is just one of a growing number of sites. Others include Ning, which allows specific businesses to create their own social networks of clients, employees and interested parties; Ryze, which allows organizers to better organize contact lists and schedules; and Xing, which aims to connect business people with experts or potential customers.

It’s equally important to be aware of the potential pitfalls of the different online networking sites. In particular, some experts voice concern over business networking on Facebook, because it allows friends and acquaintances to freely post material that will also appear on a person’s profile page; the risk is that someone else might post an inappropriate comment or photo that could actually scare away potential business contacts.

“Your professional branching-out can be comingling with your personal friends’ accounts, and you are exposing all of them if somebody decides to give away your information or post something imprudent,” says Andrea M. Matwyshyn, a professor of legal studies and business ethics at Wharton. She recommends that potential job seekers focus their activities on business-oriented sites such as LinkedIn, which are unlikely to pose the same risks.

Skip the Wild Parties

In fact, Matwyshyn says the recession — and the greater risk of layoffs that comes with it — can make Facebook even riskier as managers who make decisions about layoffs or about new hiring are increasingly exposed to online profiles. “People in this down economy are deciding whether to fire one person who has a picture of a wild party the night before [on Facebook] … while [another] person who is on the chopping block has posted pictures of his family.” Still, Matwyshyn acknowledges that she herself has an active Facebook profile because she found it an effective way to make contacts or trade information with other academics in her field of expertise.

Despite the risks, many experts are advising individuals to use the web and other tools to brand themselves. They note that until recently, executives and other professionals tended to market themselves through their resume and depended heavily on the reputation and branding of the employers they have worked for — something that makes less sense in this roiled economy with so many layoffs and job changes.

Peter S. Fader, Wharton marketing professor and co-director of the Wharton Interactive Media Initiative, says establishing a personal brand is important in an age in which consumers are more skeptical and seeking a level of comfort and trust. “Before, receivers would usually play a passive role and accept a product because it was there. Now, they want to know what your source of credibility is and why they should trust you.” He argues that this environment makes it possible for an investigative journalist, for example, to adhere to top professional standards through his relationship with his readers in what he calls “a grassroots manner. I think that’s great.”

Building an online identity also takes patience. Berger notes that at first, it is usually helpful to build a following by giving away something for free — even if it’s just nuggets of information or personal wisdom transmitted by blog postings or through commentary on Twitter. “People might enjoy that, and find that they’re willing to pay for it in another outlet.” Likewise, an attractive online personality could widen one’s list of contacts to include people able to offer job opportunities down the road.

Bradlow believes that it’s important to reach out to people who are “influencers,” who will use word-of-mouth to spread information about you and your unique expertise to their own wide networks of social contacts — a concept described by author Malcolm Gladwell in his best-selling book, The Tipping Point. “You need to seed the right people, to develop a word-of-mouth army,” Bradlow says. “Everyone should have a list of 20 or 30 people who will act as their ambassadors.”

For someone — a white-collar middle manager, for example — who might question whether he or she truly has enough unique abilities to create a personal brand, Bradlow notes the endeavor might not involve a skill as much as a specialized kind of training, or even something like philanthropic involvement in the community. The other thing he suggests to self-marketing newcomers, online or otherwise, is patience. “Branding is something that does not necessarily come with a short-term payoff. It’s a long-term investment. Why does Coca-Cola spend hundreds of millions of dollars on advertising? It’s not about increasing sales today; it’s about building brand awareness.”

Ask MacMillan, who is branding himself and his award-winning photography online and who is painfully aware of how long it takes to develop income. “I’m not trying to replace the revenue from my job through the direct revenue from my blog, because that doesn’t happen,” he says. “But the secondary revenue will be there.”
